Snakes are found all over in the world, and killed daily by humans for plenty of reasons, mostly it is because people are afraid of it and do not know much about them and because the bible say we must do it. But those reasons are closely related to the fact of miss information on our part and lack of knowledge. There is lots of active animal lovers out there who is trying to change that and teach the people to live in harmony with snakes, but so it goes with other animals also.
We must realize that most of the time we are busy invading the animal space when we walk or go out to camp in the bush. They live there are not trying to hurt us, most of the time they are hiding away or trying to catch food.
Most people will kill a snake just because they have seen it, they assume that all snakes are venomous and will attack them, but what they don’t release is, that there is more non venomous snakes out there than venomous snakes who is more afraid of humans, as humans are afraid of snakes. If they are confronted about it, they go back to the bible and say that is what the bible tells us to do.
We see snakes get mention plenty times in the Bible, it comes up in Exodus 7:12, Numbers 21:7, Acts 28:3, and probably the most well know verse is in the Garden of Eden, Genesis 3:1. They are almost always pictured with evil, but in fact, snakes are not evil in themselves. “The serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made”. The serpent was used by Satan to lie to Eve and lead her into disobedience and Adam soon followed her. Afterwards God cursed the snake, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life” Genesis 3:14. The snake has been associated with sin ever since. For us, from the very beginning, God has promised us a Saviour, speaking to the serpent in the Garden, God says, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” Genesis 3:15. Jesus said in His word that He had come to save us all from Satan.
Making use of the bible to state that we should kills snakes is a metaphor and we can’t make use of the statement. God created each animal on earth with a sense of purpose and I can say for sure that He would not want us just to kill them because we are afraid of them. I would rather say he wants us to educate ourselves on the matter.
Do you also stone your neighbours to death for cutting the grass on a Sunday, or burn your neighbour’s dog for running on your lawn, snakes are just trying to survive and live their lives in their natural environment the way God intended it to be. In a way they are good for our environment since they get rid of rodents. Snakes are not evil, we must all work together and start to educate everyone around us about these beautiful animals created by God so we can all live harmony.
For those who are teaching people on how to live in harmony with these beautiful animals, there is a lot of resources available, we can use word of mouth, they can make use of the internet and then there is snake parks, were one can get up close with snakes and other reptiles and attend a snake show. One can also go on a snake handling course which is a great way to get hand on experience and will be a step closer to overcome the fear of them. If we follow these easy steps, we can make a better world for all us.
